Gmail was released almost four years ago, and yet it is still in beta. How long is too long for a product to be in beta?

It's a rather interesting topic why Google still chooses to call it a beta product. Do they consider it a beta product as it will always evolve? Or just in the sense that it could change at whatever moment Google wishes it into existance. Google typically seems to throw a lot of resources at whatever they may be developing, but the fact that any product still wears its beta tag probably highlights products that are relatively early in development and succeed in the mission they were created to accomplish.
